Sports Footwear
Just as there are specific head gears and uniforms for certain sports, so too are sports footwear. Golf shoes are intended to be worn in a round of golf while bowling shoes will be for bowling tournaments. A sport’s foot wear is designed primarily for the player’s protection and comfort. Major brand names of sports footwear are big global firms such as Nike and Adidas. There have been many new entrants in the sports footwear industry lately.
Most brand names manufacture their shoe products in Third World countries where labour costs are low. These gives consumers the benefit of lower prices while product quality is still maintained by quality control inspection teams assigned in those low-labour countries. A major issue lately among buyers has been the use of child labour in some of these countries such as Laos and Cambodia such that these makers were forced to issue policy statements not to use child labour again. Sweat shop conditions were greatly improved after the embarrassing news item appeared in worldwide media. In their mad rush to reduce costs and improve market shares, major sports footwear makers overstepped the bounds of ethical business practices. The outcry has caused improved working conditions but the salaries are still low.
